This is Love – Pastor Matt

Ok, so my wife is like many wives. She loves romantic movies where some dude is taught how to love by some girl. They don’t like each other at first, but very quickly their friendship blossoms into full romantic love. Of course there is the moment where the guy says something to make the girl mad, and all hope is lost. Then they surprisingly get together right before the ending credits.

When we think of love, we often think of how much we—actively—love. For example, I think of love as an action. I think of my wife and kids—those that I love. Love is a powerful because I would do anything for my family. If needed, I would die for my family.

Love is the one thing that can truly motivate. Because of our love, we are willing to go to extraordinary lengths.

There is this great little verse found in 1 John–And this is love: not that we love God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.

What is amazing about this verse is that love is defined as an action by God, not by us.

When God loves us, it is an action that we cannot control. God’s love is a constant. It’s like gravity or happy Julie Andrews musicals.

A good illustration would be a mother who loves her newborn baby. That baby can’t do anything to earn or control that love. That mother’s love is a constant variable that is unshakable. That mother could not love that baby more.

That is the same way God looks at us. We might have baggage, we might struggle with temptations, we might forget to love others—that does not change God’s love for us. What we do is accept his love or deny it, and that makes all the difference.

  1. Chris and I have learned so much about God’s love for us since having children! It helps us in our understanding of God as our Father and how amazing that He would love us this way. Also, what a blessing to be able to experience parenthood and to be able to love our children while learning all the more of God’s love for us! Thanks Matt. Your posts are encouraging. Toni Belsky

    • having kids is the best way to learn about God’s love. your love becomes undying and never ending. i’m just worried about when some boy starts falling in love with my girl. it might get messy, haha.

  2. Matt, wait until they are teenagers, you really have to TRUST God and pray a lot then!
