Running the Race – Pastor Mark

There are many things I don’t get too excited about.  I don’t ride a motorcycle; I’m not big into guns; I would enjoy having a boat but it’s never happened – but I do love to run.  I found out this past Sunday that I am definitely not alone in my passion.  At 7:00 Shane Buff and I joined 8500 others in running the Twin Cities 10 Mile.  An hour later the gun sounded again and another 11,500 began the 26.2 mile journey of the Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon.

Why do people do it?  For some it’s to see if they can.  But for others there is a sheer joy that is found in running that doesn’t come anywhere else.  If you’re not a runner that makes NO SENSE AT ALL!  I understand.  I do.  I feel exactly the same way when people talking about quilting.

The New Testament uses running many times to illustrate the challenges of living the Christian life.  For example,“Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 3:13,14)  “I do not run like a man running aimlessly…” (1 Corinthians 9:26)

I learn something every time I run.  This time it was about the “Finish Line.”  As much as I enjoyed the perfect weather and the beautiful route through the Cities my favorite part was the last half-mile.  We came up Summit Ave to the Cathedral, on to John Ireland Boulevard and down the home stretch to the Capital grounds.   It was amazing!

When you’re on the course there are times when it seems the “Finish Line” will never come.  In fact, especially for the marathon runners, there are those moments when the mind goes fuzzy and the dark side whispers, “Does the Finish Line really exist?”  That is when it is so important to have someone running with you who can say, “Yes it does; all this work will be worth it,” and to have a Savior who has already run the race…and WON!

So…“Let us run with perseverance the race marked out before us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.” (Hebrews 12:2)

(FYI: Just learned that Team World Vision is running Grandma’s Half-Marathon in 2014 – June 21st.  Maybe a goal?)
